Gan Shmuel Fish-Hatchery

The Gan Shmuel Fish Breeding Center is an Israeli pioneer fish hatchery, established in 1966-67. It focuses on reproduction and genetic improvement of warmwater fishes; the Tilapias, Cyprinids and ornamental warmwater fish (Japanese koi and goldfish). At the beginning of the eighties it was the leading institution in mass-production of hormonally sex-inverted male Tilapias. At present, the total annual value of the fish (ornamentals and fry of edible fish) exported by the hatchery exceeds US$ 1,500,000. The hatchery is world-unique in propagation of the Black Carp, which is a component of the Israeli Fish Complex (IFC), that serves as a Biocontrol of aquatic environments (lakes, rivers, ponds, reservoirs etc.). The IFC is capable of eliminating the need for ecologically hazardous and costly chemicals.

SPAWNING INDUCERS
The CCPE and DAGIN (a synthetic GnRH-a), are essential for induction of spawning and artificial propagation of fish. The products have been developed as a collaborative project, that was carried out in the Tel Aviv University and in the Gan-Shmuel Fish Breeding Center (Israel). The products reflect the most modern approach to fish propagation technology.

DAGIN
Spawning induction  with DAGIN is based on using a synthetic hypothalamic peptide (GnRH) to stimulate endogenous gonadotropin release from the pituitary of treated fish. Each dose (calculated for 1 kg bw of the recipient fish) contains 10 micrograms of a super active GnRH analog and 20 mg of metoclopramide, which is directed to block the inhibitory effect of the endogenous dopamine on gonadotropin release. The product contains an inert sugar as a natural preservative.
DAGIN consists of synthetic components only, and therefore is free of any pathogen that may reside in pituitaries of donor fish used in classic hypophysation.
Spawning induction by DAGIN requires only a single injection thus reducing stress to the fish and labor as compared with classic hypophysation. DAGIN can be given at any time during the day, according to user convenience and plan of work.
Each batch of DAGIN is tested in a hatchery experiment before approval for use.
DAGIN has proven effective in spawning induction in common carp, koi, silver carp, grass carp and various forms of goldfish. These experiments formed the basis for calculating the required dose, and for prediction of the latency period between treatment and ovulation.

CALIBRATED CARP PITUITARY EXTRACT (CCPE)
Spawning induction using CCPE is based on creating a surge in the circulating level of the maturational gonadotropin (GtH II or LH), by administering the correct amount into a female fish ready to spawn.
The product is a dry whitish powder containing lyophilized aqueous extract of acetone-dried carp pituitaries and an inert sugar as a natural preservative.
The aqueous extract is fully soluble and is free of cell organelles, membranes and other particles, thus reducing its antigenicity.
The extract is heat-treated to give it shelf life of over four years (when stored refrigerated).
The biological potency of each batch is calibrated and tested in a spawning experiment before marketing.
The amount required for spawning induction is marked, making it easy to dilute and administer.
The Calibrated Carp Pituitary Extract has proven effective in spawning of common carp, koi, silver carp, grass carp and various forms of goldfish, catfish and others. These experiments formed the basis for calculating the required doses, and for prediction of the latency period between treatment and ovulation.
